Beyond the widely discussed economic crisis, Greece and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region is increasingly viewed by international investors as one full of opportunities, in energy, transport, tourism and trade. Israel, Cyprus and now Greece could potentially emerge as strategic energy producers and transit countries due to new offshore natural gas finds. Plans for major LNG facilities in Greece and pipelines connecting it to the energy-rich Caspian region, Italy, the Western Balkans and eventually Central Europe could transform Greece from an energy dependent country to an energy security provider in the European Union.
